I still hold an Honorary position at Bristol. From 2011-2014 I was a Senior Visiting Fellow at UNSW, Sydney, Australia, teaching 3rd-year Electromagnetism and Quantum Mechanics, plus occasional 1st-year courses and demonstrating in the 2nd-year laboratory. I also visited Jaffna University in Sri Lanka as a volunteer in October 2014, to give 3rd and 4th-year lectures in Advanced Electromagnetism. I returned to Jaffna to repeat this course in October 2016 and January 2019.
My research has been in Elementary Particle Physics, working at CERN, Geneva, and at Fermilab, near Chicago, USA, for many years. I am a member of the Compact Muon Solenoid collaboration at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, and was one of the 2,500 authors of the paper describing our discovery of the Higgs boson in July 2012. I am still active in CMS, taking occasional shifts to supervise the operating conditions and safe running of the detector.
I have been an active member of the Institute of Physics (IOP), the professional body for physicists in the UK and Ireland, and was elected to Council of the IOP for the period 2004-2008. I am currently Chair of the SW Branch and Treasurer of the History of Physics Group of IOP. I have delivered many lectures and demonstrations for schools and general audiences throughout my career. I am also a trained guide for visitors to CERN.
I was delighted to be awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2004, for “Services to Physics”.

Visiting Lecturer, Department of Physics, University of Jaffna I was employed at the University of Bristol as an SRC Fellow starting in 1969, then Research Associate, Lecturer, and Reader in Physics, retiring in February 2011.
